Advocating To Expand Our Scope Of Practice

Topic: This interactive session will focus on how to effectively advocate to expand our scope of practice on school campuses to include more of the NASP best practices of school psychologists as interventionists and prevention focused. This live Zoom session awards 2 CPDs.

Workshop Objectives: By participating in this workshop, attendees will: 

  1. Gain a greater understanding of the school administration mindset to systems change. 
  2. Learn at least 2 techniques to improve communication with school administration.
  3.  Develop at least 2 options for developing a strategic plan to advocate for school psychologists to offer broader services.

Presenter Information:

Dr. Neil Stafford is the Director of Exceptional Student Services and Comprehensive Health Initiatives for the Avondale Elementary School District. He is a certified school psychologist and an Arizona licensed psychologist. He has served in the role of school psychologist in all areas of AESD from preschool to the EDP program. Dr. Stafford is the organizer and leader of the APA accredited school psychology internship program at AESD which includes partner districts Saddle Mountain Unified and Deer Valley Unified. Over the last 10 years the program has supervised well over 100 trainees from the practicum to postdoctoral level. Dr. Stafford has collaborated with his district administration to bring Bayless Healthcare as a service provider on campuses, each campus has a psychologist, a counselor, and the district has added 7 social workers via a state grant.
